This PowerPoint presentation, complete with speaker notes and handouts, was created by Lynn Grieger, RDN, and Food and Health Communications. It will help individuals learn how to make informed choices about fat in their diet for improved health and longevity.
We compare saturated and unsaturated fats and review the research on these types of fats. For example, many influencers claim that seed oils are bad, but what does the research say? The research shows that while many ultra-processed foods containing seed oils may not be ideal, using seed oils sparingly to prepare whole foods like vegetables, beans, lean proteins, and grains at home is the best approach compared to usng fats that are too high in saturated fat.
A discussion of beef tallow and the research on this animal-based fat that is too high in saturated fat and stearic acid, which may contribute to the risk of colon cancer, a disease increasing in younger people.
There are also tips to lower fat and saturated fat intake, follow a more plant-based Mediterranean diet, and how to use oils as condiments as well as for high-heat cooking.
Additionally, a bonus section on Omega-3s and their health benefits, as well as their food sources, is included.
Speaker's notes guide the discussion and contain links to research and more information.
