Start the conversation for better mental health
Are you talking about the connection between healthy eating and mental health? We have the perfect poster to get this conversation started with your students and clients!
The Nine Habits for Mental Health poster summarizes lifestyle choices that can contribute to a healthier body and mind. These tips include:
- Eat a healthy diet and limit caffeine
- Reserve me time
- Stay connected to your community
- Use lists to declutter your mind
- Don't drink excessively, smoke, vape, or use drugs
- Get enough sleep
- Practice yoga or meditation
- Get plenty of exercise
- Make time for nurturing relationships
While a variety of factors affect mental health, many are not under our control. You can’t change your biology (genes and brain chemistry), life experiences (like trauma or abuse), or family history; however, you can take steps to boost your mental health through diet, sleep habits, physical activity, self-care, and avoiding alcohol, drugs, and vaping.
It’s also important to remind your students and clients that staying healthy mentally pays off with better physical health, because mental disorders can increase your risk of developing health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
Be sure your audience knows when to seek help. The National Institute for Mental Health has questions that can help assess whether the symptoms people experience are considered to be mild or severe, and when to see a health professional. You'll also find a shareable infographic that conveys this information in English and Spanish.
