All About MyPlate
"MyPlate" is a visual representation of a balanced and healthy diet that was developed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as a tool to help individuals make better food choices. It replaced the previous food pyramid and provides a simple way to understand and plan a well-rounded diet.
MyPlate divides a standard dinner plate into four sections, each representing a different food group:
-
Fruits: Fill about one-half of your plate with a variety of fruits, both fresh and whole fruits or fruit portions like berries, apples, oranges, and more. Fruits are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants.
-
Vegetables: Fill about one-quarter of your plate with a variety of vegetables, including leafy greens, colorful vegetables, and other options like broccoli, carrots, peppers, and more. Vegetables provide essential nutrients and fiber.
-
Protein: Fill the remaining one-quarter of your plate with a lean source of protein. This could include options like poultry, fish, lean meat, beans, lentils, tofu, or other plant-based protein sources.
-
Grains: Add a small side of whole grains or starchy foods, such as brown rice, whole wheat bread, quinoa, or whole wheat pasta. Grains provide energy and fiber.
In addition to the four main food groups, MyPlate also includes a small circle on the side representing dairy or dairy alternatives, such as milk, yogurt, and cheese. These provide calcium and other important nutrients.
The MyPlate concept encourages portion control, balanced nutrition, and a focus on whole foods. It's a helpful tool for building meals that are nutritionally diverse and promote health and well-being. Remember that individual dietary needs may vary, so it's a good idea to work with a registered dietitian or healthcare provider for personalized guidance on your diet.
