These lessons are part of a new comprehensive diabetes education program by Food and Health Communications, Inc. All topics can be taught individually or as part of the 12 lesson program. All lessons also reflect the health messages provided by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate. The topics are designed to support today’s consumers and aid them in understanding diabetes, enabling them to live a lifestyle that promotes balance and good health.
Here is what each lesson will do for the participants:
Lesson 1 - Diabetes 101 and Risk Factors
This lesson is the perfect introduction to diabetes. It will help participants develop a clear basic understanding of diabetes and its risk factors, as well as a general idea of what lifestyle changes will help control blood sugar. An overview of blood sugar is given.
Lesson 2 - Motivation and Smart Goal Setting
This lesson focuses on the whys and hows of making lifestyle changes in order to prevent getting diabetes or to improve life with diabetes. It will help participants learn to set achievable goals and determine which goals they need to focus on in order to live healthfully.
Lesson 3 - ABCs of Diabetes Management: A1C, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol
This lesson reviews the basics of A1C, blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as the connection between diabetes and heart disease. It will help participants learn how to measure their A1C, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, interpret what the numbers mean, and take steps to get their numbers to healthy levels. All of the new ADA cutpoints and numbers are given.
Lesson 4 - The Whys and Hows of Weight Management
This lesson explores why weight management is important and how participants can manage their weight successfully. It includes a rundown of how to measure BMI and waist circumference, along with a look at the effects of high BMI and waist circumference on health, especially as they relate to preventing and/or managing diabetes. This lesson also reviews key rules of successful weight management, laying out diet and exercise strategies to help participants take control of their weight.
Lesson 5 - Exercise to Lose and Control Weight
This lesson explores the many benefits of exercise, especially as it relates to diabetes, good health, and weight loss. It also includes motivation tips and recommendations about how much exercise people with diabetes should get in a typical week.It also reminds them to wear good shoes and take a snack or check blood sugar if they are taking insulin.
Lesson 6 - Healthful Eating with Diabetes
This lesson explores the nuts and bolts of healthful eating with diabetes. It includes a rundown of healthful meal and snack building blocks, along with a look at scheduling meals, especially as it relates to blood sugar control. This lesson also reviews the dangers of hypoglycemia, laying out warning signs and prevention strategies.
Lesson 7 - The Benefits of a Healthful Breakfast for Persons With Diabetes
This lesson takes a closer look at the health benefits of balanced breakfasts. It includes a review of the latest breakfast and diabetes research, offers a variety of tips for preparing healthful breakfasts, and features a variety of recipes for breakfast inspiration.
Lesson 8 - Make a Diabetes Plate
This lesson takes a closer look at the basics of balancing plates at each meal – the components and ratios that make healthful eating with diabetes easier. It helps participants internalize the idea that eating healthful meals comes down to building a balanced plate and offers approaches to lunches and dinners that are tasty and straightforward.
Lesson 9 - Carbohydrate Counting and Label Reading
This lesson helps participants learn to read Nutrition Facts labels, using that information to balance their carbohydrate consumption and improve their diets. Participants will learn about carbohydrates, focusing on which carbs to choose and the effects of carbohydrates on blood sugar. The lesson also includes a discussion of common serving sizes and exchanges for foods that belong in each section of MyPlate, along with a review of strategies for reading Nutrition Facts labels and determining whether or not a product is healthful.
Lesson 10 - Shop Smart
This lesson helps participants explore healthful shopping habits. Participants will learn how to use the Fooducate app to evaluate foods, creating shopping lists while reviewing the building blocks of healthful meals. The lesson also includes an exploration of how to assemble a balanced shopping list, along with discussions about healthful, effective shopping strategies.
Lesson 11 - Snack Right
This lesson helps participants learn how to plan and prepare healthful snacks. Participants will evaluate various snacks, determining whether or not they are healthful, while reviewing the impact of healthful snacking on blood sugar management. Participants will also explore recipes for tasty snacks and sample different snack combinations.
Lesson 12 - Sugar Substitutes
This lesson helps participants learn about the pros and cons of various sugar substitutes. Participants will determine whether they need to avoid sugar and, if so, in what context. They will also explore the aspects of a wide variety of nutritive and non-nutritive sweeteners, evaluating the effects of various sugar substitutes.
