When you need to look your very best now... here is a show that is our premium product on portion control! By Hollis Bass, MEd, RD, and Food and Health Communications, Inc.

Everyone's portions are distorted. A large order of French fries is actually a whole plate of fries and that is not a healthy plate. Small, resealable serving bags of snacks look like one serving but they are often many portions. This show, which is over 70 slides, is a comprehensive journey to cover all of the mistakes that people make when choosing portions so they become calorie aware.

Better still, the audience will be engaged as this very creative show becomes a cruise that takes them away to ports of call to learn about portion control. It will have everyone entertained while they learn valuable lessons to help control their portions and their waist sizes!

Here are many of the lessons they will learn for portion control and calorie awareness:

  • Learn to measure: First they see how filling up a bowl or glass might look good to the eye because the bowl is full or the salad is covered with dressing. But they need to train their eyes to choose the right portion, especially on more calorie dense foods like cheese, packaged cereals, salad dressings, margarine and ice cream.
  • Don't eat out of the bag. Single serving packages are sometimes more than a serving. Here is what one ounce of your favorite packaged snack will look like.
  • Be aware of supersizes: Lessons on supersizes and calories are learned from the Island of Super Sizes. They will see the difference between super sizes and regular sizes when it comes to calories. We use a plate to help them realize that a box of large fries is even bigger than it looks. Pour it out and you have a huge plate full of fries.
  • Make a healthy plate: You know if they eat one ounce of chips they will still be hungry. So, an important part of portion control is to choose foods that are nutrient dense and make a healthy plate. Now they feel full and they didn't eat too many calories. (PLUS they are getting enough fiber and nutrients but shhhhhhh we won't tell them that!)
  • What is calorie density? See the picture chart that shows that fruits and veggies are the lowest while fried foods and fats are the highest.
  • Let's compare: Participants see photos of foods side by side. Compare a tiny dish of fries to a baked potato filled with broccoli. Did you know a steak dinner has over 700 calories more than a fish dinner? And alfredo spaghetti, even in a smaller portion is much higher in calories than a lowfat pasta and veggie dish!

Bon Voyage!!

  • Taking a cruise and stopping at ports for all of these lessons is fun.
  • Lessons are organized by the most important things modern consumers need to remember.

Ground-breaking strategies to engage your audience:

  • Funny examples. How many people fill a bowl with ice cream or cereal? We did and then we measured the results, which are surprising! What does a big bowl of ice cream look like when you pour it into a huge, clear measuring cup?
  • Food photos, cute clipart, charts and a fun "going on a cruise" theme will make them forget they are sitting in your classroom. They are on a spa ship headed for the Bahamas!
  • Our talented artists ensure the best design that competes with industry advertising.
  • Our rich illustrations and graphics stand out from the pack.
  • Messages are positive and easily understood.
